About the Lectures, Webinars and Workshops

All of the programs listed below are presented by Roger Lee Hall.

He is Director of the Center for American Music Preservation (CAMP), which has an extensive archive and its goal is to help preserve American music from the past.

Mr. Hall has vast experience as a musicologist, ethnomusicologist, music teacher,
singer, record producer, and music conductor.

For his extensive accomplishments in music, he has been listed in various directories such as: Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.

He has spent over five decades working to preserve music from earlier America and has presented many music lectures and workshops which have received raves from the audiences

01: "Goin' Home" - Remembering Songs From Your Past
[Lecture or Webinar]


Using the nostalgic title song from the past, this program is designed to
help you recall your past life, both happy and sad, by "goin' home" again using songs. You might recall a favorite song from your own past, or from some other person in your past. Some helpful hints for choosing songs will be presented along with song examples from the speaker's past as examples to help others do the same when choosing their own favorite songs.

02: "Old Stoughton" - The Story of America's Oldest Choral Society [Le or We]

Highlights about the oldest choral society in the USA -- The Old Stoughton Musical Society -- from its beginnings in 1786 to its bicentennial observance in 1986. Among the highlights are the concerts at the Centennial Celebration of 1886 and the concerts at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The workshop will discuss more about the music and composers from the musical society's long history and its importance to American music history and the showing of a video about this oldest choral society.

03: "Lincoln and Liberty" - Music from Abraham Lincoln's Era [Le or We] -
The lecture features stories about songs and hymns from Abraham Lincoln's lifetime, especially during the Civil War. The workshop has more detail about selective songs, and a few of the popular ones will be sung with those attending.

04: "Hooray For Hollywood" - Memorable Movie Music [Le or We] - With audio and video examples, the lecture will look at selected movie soundtracks between 1933 and 1963. The workshop will highlight major film composers and then watch a one hour video program.

05: "High Hopes" - Great Movie Songs [Le or We] - a look at the popular movie tunes from the 1930s to 1960s and how they were used in the films. The workshop will discuss then watch some of the songs in video clips. There will be special attention given to the major movie lyricist,
Sammy Cahn (1913-1993), who received four Oscars for his movie songs, all of them recorded by Frank Sinatra.

06: The Naked City - Film Noir of the 1940s and 1950s [Le or We] -

A discussion of how music was used effectively along with the acting and cinematography to make the film memorable.

III. POPULAR SONGS

07: "I Got Rhythm" - The Genius Of George Gershwin [Le or We]

This program will discuss the musical importance of both George and his lyricist brother Ira Gershwin and how they helped transform popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The focus will be on their songs fro Broadway and Hollywood. There will be video clips featuring some of their songs as part of this nostalgic look back at two of the best creators for the Great American Songbook.

 

 





08: Bill Ranlde in Cleveland: From Electric Elvis to The Shakers [Le or We] -

A nostalgic look back at one of the most popular disc jockeys in America in the 1950s and his promotion and first national TV appearance of Elvis Presley in 1956. The man who introduced Elvis was a popular Cleveland disc jockey, Bill Randle (1923-2004), who was called the "Top Jock" in the country by TIME magazine in 1955. Also, the program will feature his production of a massive 10 LP record set, "The Shaker Heritage" in 1961. Two of the LP records were devoted to Shaker music and later were published on a 2 CD set with 72 page booklet written and edited by Roger Hall and titled,

09:  "Gentle Words" - The Meaning and Message of Shaker Music [Le, We, Wo] -

A discussion of music by American Shakers in the 19th and 20th centuries which have been re-discovered. For example: "Gentle Words," Shaker humility song composed by a Shaker woman in Kentucky. The workshop will focus on discussing and singing selected
Shaker songs written by Shakers.

10. "Tis the gift to be simple" - The Story of SIMPLE GIFTS

For several decades, Roger Hall has researched and recorded this popular Shaker dance song. The discussion will show how the Shaker dance song evolved from the 19th to 20th centuries and why it was later used in three separate U.S. Presidential Inaugurations in arrangements by Aaron Copland and John Williams. Also about the popular song, "Lord of the Dance," and the man who wrote it and based his song on the Shaker tune. The workshop will include recordings of the song and also ways this Shaker song can be used in concerts
