For over 175 years the Shakers produced a considerable amount of vocal music.
Their first music was composed in the 1780s and the last known Shaker song was composed in 1959.
During that time, they composed well over 10,000 single-verse songs, multi-verse hymns and
scriptural anthems in single-line melodies or in three or four-part harmony.
Because of their often revivalistic nature, they are best classified as"Shaker spirituals."Roger Lee Hall is one of the leading experts on Shaker spirituals
having researched them for 50 years. He has also sung and recorded their music.

He believed that in addition to the study of Shaker music manuscripts and printed scores,
the living Shakers needed to be consulted about their music as well.
During the 1970s and 1980s, he did in-person interviews and collected recordings of Shakers
speaking and singing at their communities in New Hampshire and Maine.
These interviews are now included on a CD-R from PineTree Productions.
