Since 1968, Roger Lee Hall has composed or arranged over 100 music titles including works for piano and instrumental ensembles, song cycles, solo songs and other music.

His music career began with pop songriting during the 1960s. He composed both pop and jazz songs, including:
"The Soho Serenade" and "Free As The Breeze." Both songs are included on the Gentle Peace CD.

In 1967, Mr. Hall was awarded a certificate with honors in music theory from Trinity College of Music
in London, England.

His composition studies at Rutgers were with Robert Nagel and George Walker  -- the first African-American composer to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1996.   Roger Hall received his Bachelor of Arts degree in music theory and composition from Rutgers University in Newark in 1970. Several of his other compositions were performed while he was a composition student there:

"Variations on an Original Oriental Theme" (Op. 1, No. 1)
"six haiku songs - for solo voice and piano" (Op. 3)
Both are included on the CD --
Gentle Peace: A Sampler of Songs and Instrumentals

Two years later he received a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from Binghamton University in New York.
In 1971, he composed a set of seven variations on a Shaker marching tune for piano (Op. 1, No. 2) and
"Tricinium" for flute, oboe and basson (Op. 6).

In 1980, he had a conversation with the distinguished composer, Aaron Copland, about his arrangements of the Shaker song, "Simple Gifts." Copland complimented Hall on his arrangements of two Shaker songs: "Gentle Words" and "Love is Little" (Op. 8).

Roger Lee Hall is now a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).

He has composed works in memory of these friends:

Sister Mildred Barker -- "A Prayer" (Op. 20)

Dorothy Woodward -- "A Little Theatre Music" (Op. 22)
John D. Herr -- "Creator God, We Give You Thanks" (Op 25, No. 2)

This is a memorial tribute to Gerhard Finkenbeiner (1930-1999), a world-renowned glassblower who had his own business in Waltham, Massachusetts.  He was also a skillful maker of the glass harmonica using Benjamin Franklin's design. Gerhard had many talents but was above all a gentle man of rare curiosity and inventiveness.  He was always willing to help out in any way possible.
